How to make a TTY Relay Call?

A person who is deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled uses a teletypewriter (TTY) connected to a standard phone line to communicate with other people.

When you use Myrelay.com, you connect to a specialized Communication Assistant (CA) who assists you in making the call.  Once connected, you type your message with a TTY to the CA who reads it to the person at the other end of the line.  The CA then listens to this person’s reply and relays it back in typing to you.

Select a call type below to view the step by step instructions for each type of call:

TTY Calling Instructions

For a person who is deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled using a teletypewriter (TTY) connected to a standard phone line to communicate with hearing people.

1. Dial 1-866-734-2888 (TTY).

2. A Nordia Relay CA will answer by typing CRS, Nordia CA “1234” (CA’s ID #), “F” or “M” (for CA’s Gender), “NUMBER CALLING TO PLS Q GA.” (This message will appear on your display screen).

3. Type in the area code and telephone number you wish to call and then type “GA”.

4. The CA will inform you of the call status: “ringing”, or “busy”.

5. When the calling to party answers (by a person or answering machine), the CA will relay (type) everything he/she hear to you, then “GA” (“Go Ahead”) indicating it is now your turn to speak (type), when you are done typing your reply, type “GA”.

6. Continue this process through your call. When you are ready to end your call, type “SK” for "Stop Keying" then hang up.

Voice Calling Instructions

For standard telephone users initiating calls to TTY users.  The Nordia CA types the hearing person’s spoken words to the TTY user and reads aloud the typed replies.

Calling from a standard telephone:

1.  Dial 1-866-734-2777 (Voice).

2.  You will hear, “California Relay Services, Nordia Operator “1234” (CA's ID #).  Have you done a relay call before?”

3.  Give the Nordia CA the area code and telephone number you wish to call and say “go ahead” (GA).

4.  The Nordia CA will process your call, read aloud what the TTY user types, and will type what you say back to the TTY user.  Be sure to talk directly to your caller, avoid saying “tell him or her”.  Say “go ahead” at the end of each response.

5.  Continue this process throughout the duration of your call. When you are ready to hang up, say "Signing Off" then hang up.
